Our Purpose

Background and context

The Institute was created based on the aspirations of both Myanmar and Australian people. A tipping point was at the time when the democratically elected government of Myanmar was taken over by the military junta and a situation akin to a civil war broke out. It aims to apply capacity building partnerships to advance social and economic welfare for Myanmar people in both Myanmar and Australia as well as bordering nations of India and Thailand where many refugees are situated.

Two members of our Board of Directors are from Myanmar and have direct experiences of humanitarian and refugee issues in Myanmar as well as the complexities of being a migrant in Australia. The two Australian Directors come from education backgrounds with the Secretary, Kingsley Wilson-Head having travelled extensively in Asia and more recently in Myanmar. All Directors have a fundamental interest humanitarian cause and promoting democracy and peace in the world.

Aims and Mission

The Australia Myanmar Institute for Democracy, Human Rights and Peace Limited (AMIDHRP) is an independent Not for Profit organisation, based in Adelaide South Australia with close links with the people of Myanmar and the Myanmar diaspora communities around the world.

We have examined the past, present and future threats to democracy and human rights in Myanmar and seeks to offer assistance, and advice services to its people and leaders in order that a legitimate government can be reinstated, and that law and order and peace can be restored.

We have through our social media services provided an up-to-date news service in English and Myanmar script to the people of Myanmar who have highly restricted internet and local Media/News services and we are developing a website to further enhance our broadcasting capabilities.

Charitable purposes

The company’s object is to pursue the following charitable purpose(s) via local, national, and global partnerships to:

• support the application of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Myanmar.
• raise funds to assist in the pursuit of democracy, human rights, and peace in Myanmar.
• lobby all levels of government in Australia, as well as the international community, to encourage advocacy and support for democracy, human rights, and peace in Myanmar.
• raise public awareness and educate the Australian and international community about the situation in Myanmar.
