Dr Zam Ngaih Cing

Dr. Zam Ngaih Cing is a linguist and academic from the Zomi community in India, specialising in language documentation, linguistic typology, morpho-syntax, semantics, orthography development and North-East Indian languages. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and qualified for the UGC-NET (JRF) in 2009.

Dr. Cing is currently an Assistant Professor at the Central University of Kerala and previously served as a Senior Resource Person at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, where she contributed to orthography development for North-East Indian languages. She has extensive teaching, research-supervision and academic experience, including supervising research projects and Ph.D. scholars.

Her research includes the documentation of the languages and cultures of smaller tribal communities in Manipur, alongside training in computational linguistics. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and published in academic books and journals.

Dr. Cing is also a translator and linguistic analyst for the Zomi Language Project at the Australia Myanmar Institute for Democracy, Human Rights and Peace (AMIDHRP). Through this role, she contributes specialist linguistic expertise to the documentation, preservation, revitalisation and digital development of the Zomi language. Her work helps connect academic linguistics, community-led language preservation and emerging language technologies.

Beyond academia, she has contributed to community outreach, Indigenous-focused programs and language-preservation initiatives. Her work reflects a continuing commitment to linguistic diversity, cultural preservation, community participation and the sustainable development of minority languages.
