Today, we stand alongside communities across Australia and around the world to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. We remember the lives lost in the 1960 Sharpeville massacre -- a tragedy that continues to remind us why the fight against racism matters so deeply.
Racism is not just something from the past. It is still experienced by many people every day -- in words, in actions, and in systems that exclude and harm. These experiences are real, and they affect not only individuals, but the strength and unity of our communities.
At the Australia Myanmar Institute for Democracy, Human Rights and Peace, we believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. We remain committed to standing against racism in all its forms and to promoting a society where everyone feels safe, valued, and included.
We recognise and welcome the work being done across Australia to address racism through education, policy, and community initiatives. But real change takes all of us. It requires each of us—governments, organisations, and individuals -- to speak up, to listen, and to support one another.
We stand in solidarity with First Nations peoples, multicultural communities, and all those who continue to face racism. Your voices, strength, and leadership are essential in building a better future.
Today is a moment to reflect -- but also a call to act. Together, we can help create a community where no one is judged by their background, and everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.
A more inclusive and compassionate Australia is possible -- and it starts with all of us.
