Zomi Language Translation Project

Adelaide, Australia — The Australia Myanmar Institute for Democracy, Human Rights and Peace (AMIDHRP), in collaboration with its joint partner, the Zomi Google Translation Committee, and in partnership with the Google Translation Team, proudly announces the forthcoming establishment of the Google Zomi Language Translation Service — a historic initiative that will provide a global digital voice for the Zomi people.

The Zomi Translation Project, first initiated by AMIDHRP and formally inaugurated in 2024, represents a groundbreaking effort to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps between the Zomi community and the wider world. By facilitating accurate translation between Zomi and English, this project aims to promote education, digital inclusion, and cross-cultural understanding for Zomi speakers globally.

This initiative emerges from AMIDHRP’s long-standing commitment to empower marginalized ethnic communities through access to language, technology, and human rights education. The translation service will make it easier for Zomi individuals, students, and organizations to engage with international platforms, pursue learning opportunities, and share their culture and perspectives more effectively across digital spaces.

The Zomi Google Translation Committee, formed through early strategic discussions between AMIDHRP and Google’s Translation Team, will be responsible for the operational and technical coordination of the project. Working closely with linguists, cultural scholars, and community representatives, the Committee will ensure that the translation database reflects the authentic phonetics, idioms, and grammatical structure of the Zomi language. This process will also safeguard the cultural integrity and diversity embedded in Zomi linguistic expression.

“Language is not only a means of communication — it is an identity and a heritage,” said Go, President and Director of AMIDHRP. “Through this collaboration with Google, we are helping to ensure that the Zomi language finds its rightful place in the digital world, preserving it for future generations while opening new pathways for global communication.”

This milestone project underscores the potential of technology to advance cultural preservation, inclusivity, and equality. It marks a significant step toward ensuring that the voices of minority language speakers are recognized and represented within global digital platforms such as Google Translate.

As preparations for the service’s official launch move forward, AMIDHRP invites community members, linguists, and partner organizations to contribute to this collective effort to promote linguistic diversity and digital empowerment.
